About

Margit Scheftelowitz

Born in Denmark 1936, living in Israel since 1961.

I studied kindergartenteaching, specializing in early childhood development.

I learned to knit and crochet at school.

Denmark has a very old tradition of knitting and crocheting. Warm clothing was produced and patterns developed. Changes in time didn’t leave fiberarts untouched. The social / cultural status of creative expression experimented with the free form.

I started picture knitting with two needles and crocheting with one crochet hook and developed my own style. I discovered later , that this is a recognized concept in mainstream art called Free Form Crochet.

Free Form Crochet is a contemporary concept of an old technique. The historical source of crochet isn’t quite clear.

In the art of Free Form Crochet, the crochet hook is the tool and the yarns, the palette of colours. The dialoque between the variety of wools, cottons, silks, and linens gives me a psysical sensation and becomes alive between my hands. The free form gives me inspiration and freedom to create pictures, wallhangings of different sizes and motives, faces peeping out of windowframes, chairdecorations, bedspraeds etc.

I use basic stitches in different combinations and techniques without sketching my motives on paper beforehand. The croched picture “happens” while working.

In a symbolic sense, combining treads, creating a piece of cloth, is like threads of life, combining people and places all over the world. A sense of warmth and security is awakened because of their depth, softness and texture.

The art of Free Form Crochet can warm the body as well of the soul.

I teach my concept of Free Form Crochet to people who know how to crochet and my house functions as a gallery and is open to visitors.
